Two BNP groups clash in Manikganj, former Chhatra Dal leader killed

Former Chhatra Dal general secretary Lavlu Ahmed (37) was killed in a clash between two BNP groups in Ghior upazila of Manikganj. Six others were injured in the incident.

The clash took place in front of the Ghior Upazila Health Complex on Monday afternoon. Lavlu Ahmed was reportedly attacked three times. Local sources said the clash was due to dominance in the area and past enmity.

The deceased Lavlu Ahmed is the son of the late Abdul Halim of Kusta village. He served as the general secretary of Ghior Upazila Chhatra Dal in 2003. He became active in BNP politics after returning home from Kuwait four monthsago.

According to eyewitnesses, police and relatives of the victims, at around 12 noon today, Jubo Dal leader Himel was severely beaten by Sohag, Tanvir, Babu, Sheetal, Tamim, Selim and at least 15-20 people from the Upazila Mor area in the Ghior bus stand area. In the fight between the two parties, Himel and his supporters were attacked in the second round while they were taking Himel, who was injured in the fight, to the Upazila Health Complex. After former Chhatra Dal leader Lavlu Mia, Upazila Jubo Dal joint convener Afiqul Islam, and Union Jubo Dal president Rahatuzzaman Altaf went to the hospital gate to see the injured, the opponents also attacked them in the third round.

At that time, Lavlu, Altaf and Himel were injured by being hacked with a chapati and a ramda. Upon receiving the information, a team from Ghior police station reached the spot and brought the situation under control.

The seriously injured Lavlu was rescued and first taken to the Upazila Health Complex for treatment. The doctor on duty there advised him to be taken to Dhaka. Later, when he was taken to Munnu Medical College Hospital from there, the doctors on duty declared him dead. And the injured Altaf has been sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Manikganj District BNP General Secretary SA Jinnah Kabir said that a party-wide investigation will be conducted into the matter and action will be taken against the culprits. He alleged that the incident of casualties occurred due to the inaction of Ghior Police Station.

Ghior Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Rafiqul Islam said that a BNP leader died in the clash between the two parties. Several others were injured. An investigation is underway. Efforts are also being made to arrest those involved in the incident. The body has been sent to the Manikganj District Hospital morgue for autopsy.
